Fair and equal representation is a right for everyone in the society. However, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey were denied these necessary rights once they decided to stand for the truth and go against what is wrong in the society. Upon conducting investigations on the matter, they were able to come up with proof of his fraudulent undertakings, and as a result, they published their findings. Their considerable efforts were trashed when Arpaio locked them up for trying to investigate him.
Since they were journalists, their colleagues were angered by the happenings that led to their arrest, and this created a revolution to help pull them out of the unfortunate situation.
The law requires that individuals are not locked up for more than 24 hours before being presented to a court. However, Larkin and Lacey were locked away without being charged under Arpaio’s orders. After much pressure from the community, they were eventually released from custody.
They filed a case against Arpaio for the damages that he had caused them. The first amendment rights of the individuals had been violated, and as a result, they were awarded over $3.75 million as a settlement.
Most people would have taken the money and used it for their gain without even considering other people in the society. Many people’s rights are violated on a daily basis without any consideration that it may be wrong. In very many cases, the authorities end up ignoring what the minority and less powerful individuals in the society need.

The Hispanic community in the USA was agitated by the occurrences that led to the arrest of Larkin and Lacey, and it helped to rally for the release of the two journalists. As much as a country may appear to be progressive and hold great promise for people who are trying to work up the ladder of success, other people tend to have some form of backward and destructive thinking.
Joe Arpaio suppressed the rights of many people, but his day of reckoning brought great change to the general American society. As advocates of the weaker individuals in the community, Larkin and Lacey continue to ensure that the rights of all people are respected.
