Austrian Mathematician

Well-known American mathematician Michael Thoreau Lacey was born September 26, 1959. Lacey graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree at the University of Texas during the year of 1981.

Later, he would then move on to newer pastures and receive his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1987, with Walter Philipp as the advisor. Professor Walter Philipp is a famous Austrian mathematician that studied probability theory and the theory of numbers. Interested in problem solving and puzzles that mostly involved the law of iterated algorithm, Lacey’s first thesis would be on the Banach Spaces Probability. A Banach space is a complete normed vector space with a metric that allows computation of the vector length as well as its distance between vectors.

Walter Philipp was Lacey’s project supervisor during the time and guided him with the necessary information and knowledge so he could complete the thesis in the right manner.

Michael Lacey would secure his first postdoctoral position at the Louisiana State University as an assistant professor from 1987-1988. For just a year after that, Lacey transferred and became an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina. There he would predominantly lecture about probability, ergodic theory and harmonic analysis. Lacey also work alongside Walter Philipp at the University of North Carolina to proof the central limit theorem.

From 1989 to 1996, Michael Lacey moved to Bloomington, Indiana and was hired as an assistant professor at the Indiana University. While working there, he received a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship recognition. There he would also begin a study of the bilinear Hilbert transform. The transform was during that time a conjecture of Argentinian mathematician, Alberto Calderon. The Hilbert transform was later solved by Michael Lacey and Christoph Thiele in 1996; they each received the Prix Salem Prize award for their achievements.

Lacey transferred shortly after to the Georgia Institute of Technology as an assistant professor in 1996, he is now currently employed as a full professor (senior professor) at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. From time to time, he would serve as a visiting professor at the Helsinki University.

Lacey has received many awards throughout his career. In 2008 he was awarded the Georgia Tech NSF-ADVANCE Mentoring Award and the Fulbright Fellowship Award. Lacey was also honored with the Simons Fellow Award during the year of 2012. Michael’s most recent was the American Mathematical Society Fellow that was awarded in 2013.

Jim Larkin And Michael Lacey Advocate For The Protection Of Human Rights

Fair and equal representation is a right for everyone in the society. However, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey were denied these necessary rights once they decided to stand for the truth and go against what is wrong in the society. Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey were journalists, and they were discharging their duties to the general society as normal when they realized that their highly decorated sheriff was a corrupt individual.

Upon conducting investigations on the matter, they were able to come up with proof of his fraudulent undertakings, and as a result, they published their findings. Their considerable efforts were trashed when Arpaio locked them up for trying to investigate him.

Since they were journalists, their colleagues were angered by the happenings that led to their arrest, and this created a revolution to help pull them out of the unfortunate situation.

The law requires that individuals are not locked up for more than 24 hours before being presented to a court. However, Larkin and Lacey were locked away without being charged under Arpaio’s orders. After much pressure from the community, they were eventually released from custody.

They filed a case against Arpaio for the damages that he had caused them. The first amendment rights of the individuals had been violated, and as a result, they were awarded over $3.75 million as a settlement.

Most people would have taken the money and used it for their gain without even considering other people in the society. However, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey decided to use the funds to bring everyone in the community together. By re-investing the money into the society, then they would be able to make a greater impact. Read more: Jim Larkin | Crunchbase and Michael Lacey | LinkedIn

Many people’s rights are violated on a daily basis without any consideration that it may be wrong. In very many cases, the authorities end up ignoring what the minority and less powerful individuals in the society need.

Larkin and Lacey are seen as the champions of the weak people as they help to educate immigrants on their rights. The Hispanic community in the USA was agitated by the occurrences that led to the arrest of Larkin and Lacey, and it helped to rally for the release of the two journalists. As much as a country may appear to be progressive and hold great promise for people who are trying to work up the ladder of success, other people tend to have some form of backward and destructive thinking.

Joe Arpaio suppressed the rights of many people, but his day of reckoning brought great change to the general American society. As advocates of the weaker individuals in the community, Larkin and Lacey continue to ensure that the rights of all people are respected.

Apart from the Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund, Other organizations that help to promote respect for human rights include the American Civil Liberty Union that ensures people in power don’t violate the rights of the disabled individuals and prisoners. Also, there is the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
